The Berlin Adlershof Science City is one of the most successful high-technology sites in Germany and Berlin’s largest media site. It is home to 1,041 companies and scientific institutions on an area of 4.2 km² - embedded in an integrated urban planning concept. 16,778 people work and 6,700 study here.
The Science and Technology Park is at the heart of the Adlershof Science City. It encompasses 512 companies and ten non-university research institutes. They focus on: Photonics and Optics, Renewable Energies and Photovoltaics, Microsystems and Materials, IT and Media, Biotechnology and Environment.
Adding to this are six scientific institutes of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The Media City is home to 147 companies. In the immediate vicinity is a landscaped park and 360 private houses have been developed on an area of 66 ha. Large additional areas enable the Science and Technology Park to grow in the future. The near future years will see the completion of 1,400 housing units for about 2,500 people in the immediate vicinity to the Humboldt-University campus.
The Berlin-Brandenburg region is home to one of the most significant clusters for optics technologies in Europe. Many of these businesses are based at Adlershof, in the Photonics Centre’s six buildings, which comprise 18,600 square metres of lab and office spaces.
The businesses are joined by the university and non-university research institutes, including Berlin Humboldt University’s Physics Institute, the Helmholtz Centre for Materials and Energy, the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Science, the Max-Born-Institute for Non-Linear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI), the National Metrology Institute (PTB), the Ferdinand-Braun-Institute, the Leibniz-Institute for Microwave Technology (FBH), the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).
Centre for Photonics and Optics
Five technology centres: Photonics/Optics, Microsystems/Materials, IT/Media, Biotechnology/Environment and Renewable Energy/Photovoltaics – provide the perfect infrastructure.
The centre’s directors facilitate specialist working groups, support cooperation and take part in events and trade shows. IGZ, OWZ and Spin-Off-Zone, the three start-up centres based at Adlershof, are located close to the Humboldt University’s Natural Sciences Campus, and the ten non-university research organisations
